The TOY Karaoke Contest functions as the prelude to the Annual Teacher of the Year Award recognition. It is part of four events that comprise this celebration:
Each is a fundraiser of the WREM Literacy Group, Inc. and the One Vision for Excellence in Education (One VEE), a consortium of non-profits with a shared vision to work toward the advancement of the child at-risk for failure because of negative and unproductive forces that comprise the environment in which they live.
The proceeds from this event are used to honor the Teachers of the Year from the southern sector as well as the Assistant Principals for their exhibition of Excellence in Education. The net proceeds from all of the fundraisers are used to further the vision of the WREM Literacy Group, Inc., the One VEE consortium, The TOY Foundation, and to support deserving students with financing their college education.
The TOY Karaoke Contest coincides with the Walk for Literacy that will be held at Fair Park on March 20, 2010. The contest will begin at 12:00 noon and end at approx. 3 pm. It is a fun way for the community and advocates of Excellence in Education to participate in the process to implement the vision of the non-profits and honor the Teachers of the Year and the assistant principals for a "Job Well Done!". The contest is both emceed and judged by professionals in the radio and/or music industry.
In addition to winning the $600.00 CASH prize, the winner gets an opportunity to attend the black tie TOY Banquet and present to one of the schools participating in the TOY celebration, a $400.00 gift in their name. The school will be chosen by the winner of the contest via random draw at the end of the contest. In addition, they will receive a certificate recognizing their donation and a trophy to commemorate their win as the 2010 TOY Karaoke Contest Winner during the Banquet.
